Leogang, July 18, 2026
Two 13- and 14-year-old girls from the region strayed from the marked trail during a hike to the 2,044-meter-high Spielberghorn in the Kitzbühel Alps on Saturday morning and had to be rescued by the Leogang mountain rescue team from steep rocky terrain.
As Georg Wölfler of the Leogang mountain rescue described, the two local teenagers wanted to take a shortcut on their way to the Spielberghorn and ended up in rough, steep rocky terrain off the marked hiking trail. According to police, the incident occurred in the morning in the area of the Lindlalm, above Leogang in the state of Salzburg.
After the two girls could no longer continue and found themselves in alpine distress, companions and passers-by alerted the emergency services. An advance team of the Leogang mountain rescue climbed up to the youths, according to Wölfler, to reach them and initiate initial safety measures.
