A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island on Wednesday evening (local time), triggering a tsunami warning for parts of the coast that was subsequently lifted.
Magnitude and Epicenter
According to New Zealand authorities, the quake occurred at 9:14 p.m. local time at a depth of 53 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 40 kilometers north of the small town of Te Anau in the sparsely populated Fiordland region on the west of the South Island, the disaster management agency NEMA reported.
The US Geological Survey (USGS), by contrast, put the magnitude at 5.9 at a depth of more than 50 kilometers. According to the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of around 76 kilometers near the small town of Te Anau. Earthquake observatories in Germany also assumed a magnitude of 5.9, according to the estimate cited by the APA (Austria Presse Agentur).
