Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar wants to nominate former chess player Judit Polgár for the office of President of the Republic and announced this plan on Sunday via Facebook.
Magyar stated on the platform that he wanted to meet Polgár in person on Monday to offer her the candidacy for the largely representative office. He hoped that Polgár would grant him "the great honor" of accepting the nomination. A statement from Polgár was not initially available.
Polgár is considered arguably the best female chess player in history. Magyar wrote on Facebook that as the most successful player in the history of chess, she had led the women's world rankings uninterrupted for 26 years. She was also the only woman ever to surpass the mark of 2,700 Elo points, which is considered "super-grandmaster" level in chess circles.
