Ried, 07 August 2026

When a fire broke out in a pig barn in Ried near Augsburg in the night leading up to 7 August 2026, more than 1,600 pigs perished while emergency services and farmers battled the flames for hours.

In the night leading up to Friday, a pig barn in Ried in the district of Aichach-Friedberg caught fire. According to the Schwaben Police Headquarters, the fire spread rapidly, leaving emergency services only a short window to rescue the animals from the building. Initial estimates put the death toll at more than 1,600 pigs killed in the blaze.

The fire department was on scene with a large-scale deployment. Because the flames had penetrated deep into the barn structure, responders initially could not directly reach the smoldering hotspots inside. As the police headquarters reported, crews therefore tore open parts of the walls with an excavator to reach the smoldering hotspots behind them.
