Farmers assist with water tanks

Local farmers also supported the firefighting operation through the night. They hauled large water tanks to the scene with their tractors to ensure the fire department's water supply. Without this assistance, firefighting at the remote site would have been considerably more difficult, spokespersons for the emergency services explained.

Despite the rapid response, the fire developed into an extensive blaze. Plumes of smoke were visible for several kilometers, and residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed. Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring agricultural buildings.

Investigations into the cause of the fire underway

According to police, there are currently no indications of intentional or negligent arson; a technical defect is also being examined.

The affected barn had reportedly been modernized only a few years earlier. Nevertheless, the enormous heat development and the structural conditions made the operation dangerous for responders. Several firefighters had to be treated for mild smoke inhalation; according to police, there was no danger to life.

Bavaria's Minister of Agriculture expressed her dismay at the loss. In an initial statement, she offered her condolences to the affected farmers and announced support for the swift reconstruction of the barn facility. The Farmers' Association also expressed concern, pointing to the economic consequences for the operation.

Animal welfare organizations demand clarification

Animal welfare organizations, meanwhile, called for a thorough investigation. They noted that barn fires with high animal losses had occurred repeatedly in recent years. Politicians must review standards for fire protection in animal husbandry, the associations said.

Cleanup work at the fire site was still ongoing in the morning. Fire investigators from the criminal police secured evidence; the exact extent of the damage was initially unclear. The affected farmer did not wish to make a public statement at first; neighbors spoke of a "shock for the whole village."

Residents reported that the sirens had woken many people from their sleep during the night. In the fields around the farm, farmers stood ready with their tractors to help supply the emergency crews. Solidarity among the farmers is strong, one helper said on site.

Authorities expect that the investigation into the cause of the fire will take several days. Only then will it be possible to assess whether technical defects, an issue with electrical installations, or another cause triggered the blaze. The farm remains sealed off for the time being.
