Firefighters in Southern California are making progress against multiple wildfires, including the largest documented fire on Santa Rosa Island, as cooler weather and subsiding winds aid containment efforts.
Hundreds of firefighters are battling wildfires across Southern California, with the most significant blazes occurring on Santa Rosa Island and near Simi Valley. The Santa Rosa Island fire, covering approximately 68 square kilometers, is the largest documented fire in the island's modern history and was 26% contained as of Tuesday evening.
The 'Sandy Fire' near Simi Valley, which has destroyed at least one house, was 5% contained as of Tuesday. Strong winds had rapidly spread the fire on Monday morning, but cooler weather has since helped firefighters gain some control.
