At least 19 people have died in India from flooding and landslides caused by monsoon rains, broadcaster NDTV and government officials reported on Sunday.

Severe Damage in Jammu and Kashmir

Most of the victims were counted in the Jammu and Kashmir region in India's far north. According to broadcaster NDTV, at least eleven people died there on the day of reporting. Authorities also reported severe damage from the floods in the region.

The weather also claimed fatalities and injuries in the northeastern state of Nagaland. A government official said at least eight people had died there. Fifteen others were reportedly injured.

Weather authorities warned on Sunday of "extremely heavy rainfall" in the coming days in Jammu and Kashmir. Given the ongoing precipitation, emergency services expect the situation to worsen further.
