Monsoon Storms in India: 19 Dead in Jammu and Kashmir

Warning of Further Heavy Rainfall

Several pilgrimages in northern India were interrupted because of the weather. Thousands of devotees who had gathered in the mountains for religious celebrations had to cut short their journeys or seek shelter.

During the monsoon months, flooding and landslides occur repeatedly in India. This year's rainy season hit the north of the country with particularly heavy precipitation, swelling rivers and destabilizing slopes.

Climate Crisis Intensifies Extreme Weather

The World Climate Council finds that the climate crisis is making extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and flooding, heat, and drought more frequent and intense. However, the report emphasizes that individual extreme events cannot be directly attributed to a single cause.

Rescue teams were deployed in Jammu and Kashmir to evacuate trapped people and search for the missing. Authorities set up emergency shelters and worked to keep transportation routes clear.

Rescue Operations and Relief Measures

The Indian government announced it would provide financial support to the affected families. The exact amount of aid is to be determined once assessment work is completed.

Weather experts expect the rainfall to continue in the coming days. Authorities called on the population in at-risk areas to prepare for further evacuations.

The monsoon in India typically lasts from June to September. During this period, around 70 percent of the annual precipitation falls, making the country particularly vulnerable to flooding.
