Grainau, September 25, 2026
A massive rockfall occurred at the Zugspitze in Bavaria on Wednesday, generating a meter-high dust cloud and, according to experts, reaching an unusual dimension for the area.
The rockfall took place in the ridge area of the north face near the Schneefernerkopf and produced a dust cloud visible from far away. According to the Grainau mountain rescue service, large masses of rock broke loose and could be observed down into the valley. Based on current findings, no one was injured.
Statements from the rescue services
Mountain rescuer Franz Dörfler described the scale of the event as unusual for the Zugspitze but pointed to comparable incidents in the region. „In dem Ausmaß ist es definitiv nicht öfter, aber es ist auch nicht überraschend“, sagte Dörfler. Damit relativierte er zugleich Berichte über ein völlig unerwartetes Naturereignis.
