Alpine transit routes experienced severe congestion during Pentecost weekend 2026, with the Gotthard tunnel traffic jam reaching 16 kilometers by mid-morning Saturday.

The ÖAMTC motoring club reported stop-and-go traffic stretching nearly 30 km on the A12 Inntal Autobahn from Völs to the Luegbrücke on the A13 Brenner Autobahn. Similar congestion built up on the A12 approaching from Kufstein, causing jams between Wattens and Volders.

By 8:30 AM, the traffic backup on the A1 West Autobahn extended to the Salzburg junction. Southern routes weren't spared either, with 45-minute delays reported before the Karawankentunnel (A11) and 30-minute waits at the Spielfeld border crossing (A9).
