Gotthard, 23 May 2026

Heavy traffic congestion at the Gotthard Tunnel during Pentecost weekend caused delays of up to 45 kilometers, with travelers facing significant disruptions.

Early morning traffic at the Gotthard Tunnel's north portal stretched 10 kilometers by 5 AM, growing to 16 kilometers by 7 AM. By 10 AM, the queue had expanded to 20 kilometers, according to reports from the TCS.

Travelers were advised to expect delays of three hours and 20 minutes, as the TCS warned of severe congestion. Alternative routes, including the A13 via the San Bernardino Tunnel, were also heavily congested.

In the opposite direction, delays were also significant. At the Chiasso-Brogeda border crossing, a three-kilometer queue caused waits of around 20 minutes in the morning.
