Holiday travel traffic caused long jams and considerable waiting times on several Austrian motorways over the weekend, with the Karawanken Motorway in Carinthia being hardest hit — according to the ÖAMTC, delays of up to one hour built up before the Karawanken Tunnel toward Slovenia.

Carinthia as Travel Traffic Hotspot

The weekend around the last Saturday in July 2026 put Austrian travel routes to a severe test. On the Karawanken Motorway (A11) in Carinthia, traffic backed up considerably before the Karawanken Tunnel toward Slovenia as early as the morning, according to ÖAMTC mobility information. At 10:00 a.m., travelers there had to wait more than one hour to exit the country, according to ÖAMTC.
