The Hague, 8 July 2026

At the dinner held on the sidelines of the NATO summit, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, his wife Charlotte Merz, and US President Donald Trump spent most of the evening together, discussing both political and personal topics, according to German government circles.

German government sources said the three had discussed political and personal issues "for largely the entire evening." They reportedly exchanged views in an atmosphere described as "animated and friendly." The meeting took place as part of the NATO summit, at which the alliance's member states had gathered in the Netherlands.

Personal encounter at the table

The relationship between Merz and Trump had recently been regarded as significantly cooler. The background, according to sources in Berlin, was the chancellor's criticism of the Iran war. The dispute over German defense spending, which Trump had called "ridiculous" ahead of the summit, had also strained the relationship. Trump had responded by announcing the withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany.
