More than three weeks after the devastating double earthquake in Venezuela, the official death toll has risen to 5,119, while authorities continue to provide no information on the number of missing persons.
Parliament President Jorge Rodriguez wrote yesterday on Telegram that 5,119 deaths have been counted since the disaster. This further increases the casualty toll from the double earthquake of June 24. The number of injured remains unchanged at 16,740.
The two earthquakes, of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24 just 39 seconds apart. The hardest-hit area was the state of La Guaira, located near the capital Caracas, with the port city of the same name. Bodies continue to be recovered there from the rubble of collapsed buildings.
