Caracas, July 17, 2026

More than three weeks after a double earthquake of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 in Venezuela, the government has put the death toll at 5,069, as announced by parliamentary president Jorge Rodríguez on Friday.

The two tremors struck the north of the South American country within 39 seconds on June 24. According to the US earthquake monitoring agency USGS, the possible number of victims had previously been estimated at up to 10,000. The death toll now confirmed by the Venezuelan authorities stands at 5,069 — below that estimate, but well above the 5,000 threshold.

Scale of the destruction

The northern state of La Guaira is the hardest hit according to official figures. Numerous buildings were completely destroyed by the earthquake, and entire neighborhoods lie in rubble. The authorities are speaking of a disaster area. In addition to the dead, 16,740 people were recorded as injured, and a further 17,907 are homeless after the tremors.
