Seatbelt requirement and causes of accidents

Of the roughly 8,000 injured, 4,459 were male, which corresponds to about 56 percent. Among injured men, no such high figure has been recorded since 2017. This development shows that men are disproportionately affected in road traffic.

Among those fatally injured, about 52 percent were in a passenger car, eleven persons were on foot, and nine were in a truck. Statistics Austria also pointed out that at the time of the accident, only 83 percent of the fatally injured persons had been wearing a seatbelt.

Car occupants as the largest group

A notable development can be seen among injured car occupants: With 4,662 injured passengers in cars, the highest figure for the first quarter since 2019 was reached. Here too, an increase compared to the same period the previous year can be observed.

Statistics Austria recorded the data as part of its ongoing traffic accident statistics. The authority analyzes both injured and killed persons in road traffic and publishes the results regularly. The current figures for the first quarter of 2026 were released on Wednesday.

Demands and outlook

Safety experts have long pointed out that wearing a seatbelt significantly increases the chances of survival in an accident. The fact that 17 percent of those fatally injured were not wearing a seatbelt underscores these warnings. The figures for pedestrians and truck occupants among the killed also indicate a need for action.

The development of recent years makes clear that measures for traffic safety continue to gain importance. These include, for example, speed limits, awareness campaigns on the topic of seatbelt requirements, as well as measures to protect unprotected road users. Statistics Austria will publish the further quarterly figures in the course of the year.

From the perspective of accident research, the rise in injury figures shows that prevention work must be intensified. In addition to infrastructural measures, driving behavior and the personal responsibility of road users also play a central role. The coming months will show whether the trend continues or whether countermeasures take effect.
