In 2025, 73 people died in truck-related accidents in Austria, an increase of 31 fatalities compared to the previous year.
According to recent statistics, one in six traffic fatalities last year was the victim of a truck accident. This marks the highest number of fatalities since 2016.
The situation is particularly dire in Lower Austria, where 25 people lost their lives in truck accidents. Overall, one in 16 truck accidents proved fatal.
The VCÖ (Transport & Environment Austria) is now calling for countermeasures. These include increased controls, mandatory safety assistance systems, and a reduction in heavy traffic.
The organization points out that trucks are involved in fatal accidents six times more often than their share of all accidents would suggest. In truck accidents involving injuries, 62 out of 1,000 participants died, compared to just 11 fatalities per 1,000 accidents in other cases.
