Sharp Increase in Fatalities from Truck Accidents in Austria

VCÖ expert Klara Maria Schenk analyzed the alarming increase: 'The figures show that urgent action is needed.'

Trucks pose a particular risk when turning right, as they often overlook pedestrians and cyclists. The VCÖ is therefore calling for mandatory turning assistants in all trucks.

Additionally, dangerous intersections must be made safer. In Austria, a transit country, stricter enforcement of the 80 km/h speed limit for trucks on highways is also necessary.

Dangerous Situations

The high tolerance threshold means most trucks drive significantly faster. In Tyrol, the number of violations against driving and rest periods rose from 116 in 2024 to 335 last year.

The VCÖ suggests reducing truck traffic in cities through urban freight logistics. Micro-hubs and smaller vans or cargo bikes could take over distribution.

The organization emphasizes that more controls are generally necessary. Only this way can road safety be improved.

The current figures show that trucks pose a disproportionately high risk compared to other vehicles. Policymakers are now called upon to take effective measures.
