Vienna, 01 July 2026
In the first half of 2026, the number of traffic deaths in Austria fell to 156 according to preliminary figures from the Ministry of the Interior, while the VCÖ already counts 160 deaths by mid-year and is calling for stricter speed limits.
During the same period last year, 170 deaths were recorded by the Ministry of the Interior. This puts the number of traffic deaths in the first half of 2026 below the previous year's figure, though only in the Corona years 2020 and 2021 as well as in 2024 were fewer deaths counted by mid-year, the ÖAMTC announced on Wednesday.
According to the VCÖ, the number has risen again since the weekend and currently stands at 160. "Die Zahl der Todesopfer ist weiterhin sehr hoch, bereits 160 Menschen verloren heuer ihr Leben im Straßenverkehr," said VCÖ expert Klara Maria Schenk.
