Kaprun, July 17, 2026

A US American hiker was recovered uninjured in the High Tauern in Salzburg province during the night into Friday, following a search operation involving more than a dozen mountain rescuers.

The woman had set out on Thursday from the Mooserboden reservoir in Kaprun via the Kapruner Törl at 2,636 meters above sea level toward the Rudolfshütte in the municipality of Uttendorf in the Granatspitzgruppe. After she had separated from a companion, she lost her orientation, as Franz Waltl, local branch leader of the Enzingerboden mountain rescue, explained. "She lost her orientation, and it got dark. Due to the lack of navigation, she had been walking in circles," Waltl said.

Her mobile phone battery was dead, as was a power bank she was carrying. Her companion, who had already arrived at the Rudolfshütte at an altitude of 2,315 meters, noticed in the evening that the hiker had not appeared and alerted the emergency services. According to the mountain rescue service, the Kaprun local branch was alerted at 9:50 pm.
