Schladming, June 30, 2026
Around 30 people were cut off from the outside world on Sunday evening following a mudslide in Untertal near Schladming in Upper Styria and were subsequently cared for by emergency services.
According to APA, the mudslide was triggered around 8:45 p.m. by a strong thunderstorm cell with heavy rainfall. The mudslide buried the Untertal road, which leads to a valley head at the Riesach Falls, a popular hiking area for tourists with several mountain huts for overnight stays. The road became impassable over a length of around 600 meters.
A Thunderstorm Cell Was the Trigger
According to the information provided, one participant of the so-called Drei-Tage-Königstour (Three-Day King's Tour), a multi-day hiking event in the region, was also affected. Operations commander Hermann Zechmann told APA: "Sie hatten sich bereits alle in der Waldhäuslalm konzentriert." This defused the situation after the mudslide, as the group had gathered at a protected point.
