North Rhine-Westphalia will keep its suspension of the Sunday driving ban for trucks over 7.5 tonnes in place until the end of September, the state confirmed in response to a report by the Rheinische Post.

The exemption was first introduced to relieve pressure on freight transport after disruptions to inland shipping on the Rhine, and the state has now opted to prolong the measure rather than let it lapse. Under the existing rules, heavy goods vehicles are normally prohibited from driving on Sundays and public holidays. With the extension, hauliers can continue to run scheduled weekend deliveries in North Rhine-Westphalia for several more weeks.
