Nuremberg, 03 July 2026
Following a failure triggered by extreme heat, Nuremberg's trams remained largely out of service at the start of the morning commuter rush on 3 July 2026, while the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (VAG) has tentatively resumed operations on one initial route.
The VAG subsequently suspended tram operations over the weekend. Operations have now been tentatively resumed on the first route, the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (VAG) announced. A spokesperson stated that it was currently unclear at what intervals the remaining sections would be reopened.
The extreme heat caused the filling compound between the rails and the road in Nuremberg to become soft like chewing gum. Specifically, the heat caused the bitumen that serves as filling compound between the rails and the road to soften, as the VAG reported. The viscous mass then wrapped around the wheels of the trams, thereby contaminating the rails and the bogies.
