The price of a barrel of North Sea Brent crude rose above the $90 US mark in the night to Monday for the first time since early June and reached a daily high of $91.42, triggered by the escalation of the Middle East conflict around the Strait of Hormuz.

The Middle East conflict has the oil markets firmly in its grip once again. The price of a barrel (159 liters) of North Sea Brent for delivery in September climbed by nearly four percent to $91.42 US dollars (79.95 euros) in the night to Monday, thereby crossing the $90 mark for the first time since early June. The Brent price was unable to fully hold this level. It most recently stood at $90.20. Since the beginning of July, the global benchmark crude has become nearly 30 percent more expensive.
