Austrian energy group OMV is building a 140-megawatt plant for the production of green hydrogen in Bruck an der Leitha in Lower Austria. The total investment amounts to around €600 million, and production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027.
Largest hydrogen plant in Europe taking shape in Lower Austria
The facility is being implemented as a joint venture with the Abu Dhabi-based company Masdar. According to OMV, the plant is expected to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year in the future. The hydrogen will be transported via a 22-kilometer pipeline directly to the OMV refinery in Schwechat, where it will be used to manufacture fuels and chemical products.
The major project is being financed, among other things, by a loan of €450 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB). In addition, the Austrian promotional bank aws had already committed funds amounting to €123 million. OMV Chief Financial Officer Reinhard Florey described the EIB loan commitment as a strong signal of confidence in the company's transformation strategy: „Die Darlehenszusage der Europäischen Investitionsbank ist ein starkes Signal für das Vertrauen in die Transformationsstrategie von OMV und unsere Fähigkeit, Großprojekte umzusetzen, die zur Dekarbonisierung der Industrie beitragen.
