The passenger ferry "Funny Girl" suffered an engine failure roughly five kilometers east of the North Sea island of Helgoland on Saturday, drifted disabled for nearly two hours in stormy conditions, and was ultimately towed to Cuxhaven, where it arrived safely late in the evening.
The ferry, operated by Adler & Eils, was traveling from Büsum to Helgoland when the breakdown occurred. At 12:45 on Saturday, the crew raised the emergency alarm after the vessel lost propulsion a few nautical miles off the island in the Kreis Pinneberg area, according to the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS).
There were 69 people on board, including the crew, among them at least one chronically ill passenger who required medication and might need medical assistance, the DGzRS said. A rescue cruiser was dispatched to the scene, and an ambulance was sent to the pier in Cuxhaven as a precaution, DGzRS spokesperson Christian Stipeldey told reporters.
