A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck southern Mexico on Friday morning and was also felt in neighboring Guatemala, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning.
Magnitude and epicenter of the quake
The quake occurred at 8:48 a.m. local time (4:48 p.m. CEST) and had a magnitude of 7.3 at a depth of 15 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey. After the tremor at 8:48 a.m. local time (4:48 p.m. CEST), the epicenter was located off Mexico's Pacific coast, about 48 kilometers southwest of Aquiles Serdán in the state of Chiapas.
Mexico's Seismological Institute reported the magnitude as 7.4 and the depth as ten kilometers. The figures from the two institutes differ slightly in magnitude; both, however, classified the quake as severe.
