ProSiebenSat.1 and ZDF expand cooperation to streaming: ZDF content comes to Joyn

The backdrop to the alliance is growing competitive pressure from international platforms. The aim is to strengthen German media offerings in competition with international platforms such as Netflix or YouTube. The joint presence on Joyn is intended to help make ZDF content more visible beyond its own media library.

ZDF Audience Director Florian Kumb stated that the discoverability of public-service journalistic offerings in the digital space would be strengthened as a result. From the broadcaster's perspective, the cooperation is an important lever for increasing reach among younger, streaming-oriented target groups that use traditional linear programming less frequently.

What does the step mean for users?

Operationally, the agreement means a concrete roadmap: the launch of the new streaming offering on Joyn is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Until then, technical adjustments to the platform and editorial agreements on the selection of content will be necessary.

Both sides emphasized that the agreement builds on the new Media State Treaty, which is expressly intended to facilitate cooperation between public-service and private providers. The treaty is thereby being implemented for the first time in practical terms at the streaming level between a major private corporation and a public-service broadcaster.

Observers see the step as a signal for further possible alliances in the German market. Should the model prove successful on Joyn, it could serve as a template for additional collaborations between ARD, ZDF and private broadcasters, for example in joint media libraries or cross-platform recommendation features.

Roadmap through the end of 2026

With the integration of ZDF news, documentaries, cultural, factual and entertainment formats on Joyn, users will in future gain direct access to a broad mix of public-service content via a private platform. At the same time, this changes the role of Joyn, which has previously been known primarily as a live offering for linear private channels and is now positioning itself more strongly as an on-demand destination for diverse programming content.

The agreement comes at a time when German media policy is increasingly focusing on cooperation rather than competition between the systems. The Media State Treaty provides the legal framework for this; the newly announced cooperation between ZDF and ProSiebenSat.1 is regarded as the first major application of these new principles in the streaming sector.

Overall, both partners see the collaboration as a model case that demonstrates public-service diversity and private-sector reach can complement each other without blurring their respective profiles. Kumb and Agudo Berbel pointed out in unison that journalistic quality and reach need not be opposites.

With a view to the fourth quarter of 2026, the coming implementation phase is considered decisive. If the roll-out proceeds smoothly from a technical standpoint and user acceptance is positive, the cooperation could mark the start of broader networking of German media offerings on shared platforms.
