The Turkish police arrested 39 people, including journalists, academics, and members of left-wing extremist groups, in raids across eight provinces shortly before the NATO summit in Ankara.

Conduct of the security forces

According to the state-run news agency Anadolu, security forces searched several apartments and business premises in the run-up to the alliance meeting scheduled for July 7 and 8. Ammunition and prohibited digital materials were reportedly seized. The authorities cited alleged membership in an extremist organization, among other reasons, for the arrests. According to the security forces, the operation targeted the youth organization of a banned left-wing group.

In the western Turkish province of Kocaeli, police took an additional 28 suspects into custody in a separate operation, according to information from APA. They too are accused of links to extremist groups. In total, at least 67 people have been detained in connection with the security operations. Similar arrests had already taken place in Turkey the previous week. The government had previously significantly stepped up its security measures around the NATO summit in the capital Ankara.
