At the Football World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the average attendance per match according to FIFA is below the figure from the 1994 final round ahead of the quarterfinals, while the overall balance has reached a new record.
After 96 matches played, FIFA counts a total of 6,259,584 stadium attendees. The tournament has thus already surpassed the previous best mark before the final eight matches. In 1994 in the USA, when 24 teams took part, the overall balance according to FIFA was slightly more than 3.5 million spectators.
Despite the record in the overall balance, the average per match is lower than 32 years ago. Ahead of the quarterfinals, which begin on Thursday with the duel between France and Morocco (10:00 PM CEST/Magenta TV and ARD), FIFA reports an average of 65,204 attendees per match. In 1994, the average after Brazil's final victory against Italy was 68,991.
