Romania's designated Prime Minister Eugen Tomac returned his government mandate on Sunday, prompting President Nicușor Dan to task Adrian Vestea with forming a new cabinet in a move that has reopened conflict within the ruling PNL.
Eugen Tomac, who had been designated to assemble a government, gave back his mandate on Sunday morning, citing an absence of parliamentary support beyond the post-communist PSD. His decision left President Nicușor Dan searching for an alternative candidate to lead Romania out of a protracted political stalemate.
Within hours, the president turned to Adrian Vestea, the incumbent county council chief of Brașov (Kronstadt) and a liberal politician regarded as belonging to the PSD-aligned wing of the PNL. Vestea announced that he intends to form "ein politisch besetztes Kabinett" rather than a technocratic one, signaling a clear break with the expert-led approach Tomac had pursued.
