Ministry Announces Presentation
The Environment Ministry in Schwerin has announced that it will publish an initial evaluation on Friday of data from a satellite transmitter that was attached to the humpback whale "Timmy" shortly before its release into the North Sea. Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) will present the assessment of the transmitter data, the ministry said. To date, no information about the recorded movements of the animal after its release on 2 May has been published.
According to the ministry, the data provide insight into the distances covered by the whale after its release and thus "wichtige Erkenntnisse für die Gesamtbewertung des Falls". The ministry hopes the evaluation will yield indications of why the animal died a few days after being released. A spokeswoman also pointed out that a definitive cause of death has not yet been established.
