More than 900 suspected Ebola cases and over 200 deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri province, as volunteers and health workers struggle to contain the outbreak amid widespread community distrust.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on Sunday that over 900 suspected cases and at least 200 fatalities had been registered, with the Bundibugyo variant of the virus driving the outbreak. First identified in 2007, this strain carries a mortality rate of roughly 30 to 50 percent.
On Friday the WHO raised the risk of national spread to “very high,” while the regional risk is considered “high” and the global risk remains “low.” The epidemic has already reached multiple population centers, complicating containment efforts.
