Severe storms over the weekend on the Greek island of Crete flooded roads, trapped people in vehicles, and cut off tourists in the Samaria Gorge from the trail.

Situation on the Island

The heavy rainfall hit several regions of the Mediterranean island, causing flooding, landslides, and blocked traffic routes. According to authorities, the western part of the island around the city of Chania as well as areas in the south were particularly affected.

In the Samaria Gorge, one of Crete's most-visited tourist attractions, hikers were temporarily stuck. The region's Vice-Governor for Civil Protection, Giorgos Tsapakos, told the Greek news agency ANA: "Die Situation ist voll unter Kontrolle. Sie haben etwas zu Essen und Medikamente und sind an einem warmen Ort, aber der Flusspegel erlaubt es nicht, dass sie den Ort verlassen."
