The German Shipowners' Association has sharply criticized the proposal by US President Donald Trump to levy a protection fee of 20 percent of the cargo value for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Background: Why the strait is so important

The Chief Executive of the German Shipowners' Association (VDR), Martin Kröger, accused Trump in an interview with "Wirtschaftswoche" of calling into question the system of freedom of navigation with his initiative. No single state should unilaterally make free access to an international waterway dependent on fees. Moreover, such a measure would not be legally permissible.
