Sick leave in Austria is shorter than it has been in years, according to a recent analysis, while respiratory illnesses are on the rise, according to one of the study's authors.

According to current data, the average duration of sick leave in Austria is as low as it has been in years. The development comes amid a phase in which respiratory illnesses have overall increased, according to study author Christine Mayrhuber. Mayrhuber had already stated in an earlier STANDARD report: "Das ist gekommen, um zu bleiben." DER STANDARD has recently compiled further figures and facts on sick leave in Austria and compared the regulations of other European countries.

ÖGB response

The Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) described the decline in the average duration of sick leave as fundamentally positive. At the same time, the union cautioned that there was no reason to sound the all-clear. The assessment refers to the most recent data and also takes into account the rising number of respiratory illnesses.
