Six incidents documented at Tesla in Grünheide 2025 - no environmental damage

The Brandenburg State Environmental Office emphasized that in none of the six documented cases were negative consequences for the environment identified. This year as well, there have been two incidents so far - "also without negative consequences for the environment," as stated. More specific details about the two current incidents were not initially released.

Groundwater: Inspectors see no need for action

Despite the accumulation of disruptions, the responsible inspectors see no reason to intervene regarding groundwater. Tesla's latest "Groundwater Protection Monitoring Report" for 2025 shows that several accidents on the site had no negative consequences for the groundwater. "Es kam zu keinen detektierbaren Zutritten von Schadstoffen in das Grundwasser," the report states. The concentrations did not pose a threat to the water.

Groundwater monitoring at the site is conducted by the company Fugro on behalf of Tesla Manufacturing Brandenburg SE. The investigation is mandated by the Lower Water Authority of the Oder-Spree district to detect possible changes in groundwater. In general, according to the report, a continuous exceedance of limit values is usually observed only for iron and manganese, as well as for aluminum at some measuring points. The inspectors see no need for measures: "Mit Blick auf die Grundwasserdynamik und -beschaffenheit ergibt sich gegenwärtig kein konzeptionelles Handlungserfordernis".

Site located in a water protection area

The picture is, however, complicated by the location of the plant: The Tesla plant in Grünheide, which opened in March 2022, is the only Tesla car factory in Europe and is partially located in a water protection area. Tesla is permitted to use up to 1.4 million cubic meters of water per year there. After heavy rain in July 2025, a comparatively high increase was measured at measuring points around the seepage basins.

Tesla's water consumption has decreased significantly in recent years, according to the company. "Der Verbrauch sei von 450.000 Kubikmeter Wasser im Jahr 2024 auf 300.000 Kubikmeter im Jahr 2025 zurückgegangen," Tesla said. Production expansion planned

Regardless of the incidents, Tesla plans to significantly ramp up production in Grünheide. The goal is 7,500 vehicles per week (375,000 per year). After an increase in summer, production volume was to be raised by another fifth starting in October. Tesla also plans 3,500 new jobs at the site - including additional personnel for battery cell production. Most recently, 10,700 people worked at the plant.

Criticism from environmental groups and residents

Critics and local residents have expressed concerns for years due to the plant's location in a water protection area. Environmental groups are calling for stricter requirements and independent monitoring. The authorities, however, point to the positive findings of the latest inspections.

According to Tesla, the monitoring report is updated regularly and reviewed by the responsible state authorities. A statement from Tesla's management on the six incidents from the previous year was not initially available. On Wednesday, Tesla's stock traded in pre-market NASDAQ trading at times 0.19 percent higher at $396.95.

Overall, the available reports paint a picture of an industrial site with an elevated number of disruptions but without proven environmental damage. Whether further incidents will occur in the current year also depends on the expansion of production and the commissioning of additional facilities.
