Crash site and flight

The Piper had taken off from the airfield in Seitenstetten (district of Amstetten) for a sightseeing flight, according to the police. Police spokesman Stefan Loidl said this on Monday in response to an inquiry. The crash occurred in a remote forested area near the locality of Neuhaus. The wreck of the single-engine, four-seat Piper-type small aircraft was recovered by helicopter on Sunday evening.

In the crash, the 47-year-old pilot and a woman of the same age lost their lives. A 15-year-old and a 41-year-old – who are niece and uncle – suffered serious injuries. The two survivors were rescued by the emergency medical helicopter via winch and flown to hospitals in Amstetten and Linz. The operations were difficult due to the steep terrain.
