The third day of the British Open brought Austrian professional golfer Sepp Straka a bitter setback: with a round of 74 (4 over par), he dropped from 25th to a tie for 64th place, while American Sam Burns took over the lead.

The 33-year-old had made a solid start on Thursday, opening in a tie for 13th, and after the second round had been just two shots off the top ten. On the third day of play at Royal Birkdale Club in Southport, however, nothing came together for the Austrian.

Five bogeys and only one birdie produced a round of 74 (4 over par), dropping him 39 places. That effectively ends any chance of a top finish at the British Open for the player of Scottish descent, at least for now.

Straka, who finished runner-up at The Open in 2023, is unlikely to be in contention for the title on Sunday. Even before the round it was clear that only a significantly better day could turn things around.

Burns takes the lead

At the top of the leaderboard, meanwhile, a top-class duel developed. The 30-year-old American Burns, world number 18, held the lead after the third round and is eyeing his first major triumph.
