The number of suspensions at Austrian schools rose again in the past school year, prompting the Ministry of Education, together with the federal states, to introduce a mandatory suspension support program beginning in the coming school year.
Current Figures and Distribution Across the Federal States
The statistics from the education directorates show that, in the school year just ended, more suspensions were issued in all nine federal states than in the previous year. The authorities recorded the temporary school bans particularly frequently in Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Salzburg and Burgenland. A suspension means that a student is excluded from classes for a limited period of time, generally because of serious disciplinary incidents.
