Kaohsiung, 08 August 2026

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te on Saturday observed a major live-fire military exercise along the island's southwestern coast, designed to test command coordination, combat response and homeland-defense capabilities using real troops and equipment.

The exercise was held in the Kaohsiung area, a key southern port city and home to a major portion of Taiwan's naval and ground forces. According to the president's office, the drill brought together army, navy and air-force elements and was conducted on real terrain with live munitions rather than simulated systems. Officials said the goal was to evaluate how the three services coordinate under conditions closer to a real conflict scenario.
