Telekom secures TV rights to 2030 FIFA World Cup and will broadcast all matches on MagentaTV

2030 World Cup across three continents

The upcoming 2030 World Cup will be held in three countries: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are designated as hosts. Opening matches are also planned in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to mark the tournament's one hundredth birthday. A total of 104 matches are to be broadcast on MagentaTV.

In addition to the 2030 World Cup, Telekom has also secured rights to the 2028 UEFA European Championship, according to the company. This significantly expands the group's portfolio of sports broadcasts in Europe. Both tournaments are considered major sporting events with high viewership.

Public broadcasters left empty-handed

Public broadcasters were also interested in the media rights for 2030, according to their own statements. ARD and ZDF had regularly broadcast major football events in the past. Whether and in what form they will be part of the 2030 World Cup remained initially unclear.

The economic dimension of the tournament is considerable: FIFA generated revenues of approximately 5.8 billion US dollars at the World Cup in Qatar. For the ongoing 2026 World Cup, revenues are estimated at around 15 billion US dollars – a record figure underscoring the growing commercial significance of world football.

Potential impact on the share price

A large portion of the revenues from rights sales is to flow to FIFA's 211 member associations, according to the world governing body. The organization uses these proceeds to fund, among other things, development aid, tournament organization, and youth programs. The award to Telekom is therefore also relevant for the global association structure.

The news was received positively on the stock market. Various analyst houses had most recently rated Deutsche Telekom with „Buy" (UBS, July 13, 2026) or „Overweight" (JP Morgan, July 10, 2026). The share price of the Bonn-based group moved slightly into positive territory after the World Cup rights became known.

With the acquisition of the rights, MagentaTV is positioning itself as the central destination for football fans in Germany. The platform operator relies on a pay-TV model that allows subscribers to follow all matches live. The extent to which free-to-air broadcasts will be part of the offering is currently unknown.

The 2030 World Cup marks the start of a series of major sporting events that will run on the Telekom platform in the coming years. With the 2028 European Championship in Great Britain and Ireland and the 2030 World Cup, MagentaTV will have a unique programming feature in the German market for years to come.
