A White House spokesperson welcomed the decision and attributed it to the administration's trade policy measures. The Toyota investment announcement is „one of many driven by the Trump administration's agenda of tariffs, deregulation, and tax cuts," the spokesperson said.

Trade policy background

The site selection comes amid a phase of heightened trade policy tensions between the United States and Mexico. For Toyota, the move represents both a move closer to the US market and a response to changed tariff regulations and incentive structures.

According to current information, the production relocation primarily affects the Tacoma model range. The Mexican facility, which had only recently taken on the move a few years ago, is currently expected to retain parts of its previous tasks, although Toyota has not yet provided concrete figures.

With the expansion in San Antonio, Toyota is also responding to persistently high demand for pickup trucks and medium-sized trucks in the North American market. The capacity expansion is intended to shorten delivery times and organize production closer to the end customer, the group explained.

Signal to the industry

Observers view the decision as a signal to other manufacturers. The high proportion of state and local subsidies in Texas shows that US states are increasingly competing for automotive industry investments with financial aid that goes beyond pure tax relief.

The Mexican side did not initially comment officially on the relocation. The previous production site in Mexico, which was only opened in 2020 for Tacoma manufacturing, is likely to lose part of its capacity utilization in the medium term.

Toyota described the project as one of the largest US investment programs in the company's history. The group stressed that the decision is designed for the long term and is intended to structurally strengthen Toyota's presence in North America.

Outlook to 2030

Overall, the announcement underscores the trend of global automakers recalibrating their production networks. According to industry representatives, the competition for locations between the United States, Mexico, and Canada will be reshuffled with every major investment decision.

With the planned opening by 2030, however, there remains a long implementation period. Until then, trade policy framework conditions, economic developments, and demand for combustion-engine pickup trucks could still significantly influence the actual workforce buildup and production launch.
