The US government has rejected an extension of the USMCA free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada in its current form, thereby setting in motion a ten-year deadline until the treaty could expire.
As US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced on Wednesday, the decision triggers a ten-year deadline until the treaty expires. „Damit beginne eine zehnjährige Frist bis zum Auslaufen des Vertrags", US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said today. The pact will remain in force for another ten years and will be reviewed annually, the announcement added. US representatives had informed their negotiating partners in a virtual conference.
The government in Washington is seeking changes in order, as it says, to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US and reduce trade deficits. A 16-year extension is possible at any time if the three countries agree on adjustments. If no such adjustments are reached, the USMCA will expire after the ten-year deadline. The US government criticizes that the concerns of US farmers, manufacturers, and businesses are not being sufficiently taken into account.
