US President Donald Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, whether he could imagine traveling to Moscow for peace negotiations.

Zelenskyy rejected the idea – "Der Ukrainer verneinte" – though not out of fear of the Russian aggressor. As the report indicates, he justified his refusal with a view to the military situation: too many Ukrainian drones are now operating in Russian airspace for a visit by the Ukrainian head of state to Moscow to seem sensible.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara and was one of the rare direct contacts between Trump and Zelenskyy. According to the report, the US President introduced the proposal into the conversation without any discernible preparation. No concrete agenda items or formal outcomes of the meeting were initially made known.
