The Grödig mountain rescue team recovered two German hikers from the Untersberg on Friday afternoon after they had lost their way in the area around the Mittagsscharte and made an emergency call shortly after 16:00.

The Grödig mountain rescue team, the local branch of the alpine rescue service in the municipality south of Salzburg, was called to an operation on the Untersberg on Friday afternoon at around 16:00. According to operations commander Thomas Hettegger, two German citizens had lost their way in the pathless terrain around the Mittagsscharte when they left the unfamiliar summit area and strayed from the marked trail.

Since the hikers were at an altitude that could no longer be reached by vehicle, the mountain rescuers set out immediately with rope and recovery equipment. Hettegger coordinated the operation together with several helpers from the local branch, who promptly began the ascent into the affected area around Stöhrhau.
