Two major earthquakes struck northern Venezuela within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening, toppling buildings in Caracas and prompting acting President Delcy Rodríguez to declare a state of emergency.
Tremors near Morón
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that an initial 7.2-magnitude quake was followed less than a minute later by a 7.5-magnitude event in the same area, with the epicenters located near the town of Morón on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, approximately 100 miles west of Caracas. USGS described the pair as a "doublet," with the second being the largest earthquake to strike Venezuela since a 7.7-magnitude quake in 1900. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 13 kilometers.
