Yerevan, October 31, 2026
Representatives of 24 states agreed on October 31, 2026, in Yerevan on a political agreement to protect biological diversity.
The understanding reached in Yerevan was welcomed in principle by the participating states. Catherine Weller stated: “The fact that the states reached an agreement at all is good news.” The negotiations acknowledge a concrete political step, while practical implementation depends on resolving key issues.
The central point of the agreement is political commitments to protect biodiversity. Greenpeace International biodiversity expert An Lambrechts, however, doubted that these commitments would eliminate the existing obstacles. He pointed to inadequate funding, fiscal and debt-related constraints, and the almost empty coffers of the Cali Fund.
