Angern an der March, August 4, 2026

A 72-year-old man became unconscious on Monday morning while attempting to cross the March in the area of the ferry in the municipality of Angern an der March (district of Gänserndorf, Lower Austria) toward Slovakia and could only be rescued through the courageous intervention of a pedestrian.

As police announced in a statement, the incident occurred on Monday morning in the area of the ferry in the municipality of Angern an der March. The 72-year-old had apparently attempted to cross the river toward the Slovak side and collapsed unconscious in the water for reasons that have yet to be clarified.

Without the rapid intervention of the passerby, the situation would likely have had a fatal outcome for the man. The pedestrian recognized the emergency, pulled the unconscious man out of the water, and brought him to safety on land. Police explicitly described this as a "Rettung in höchster Not" — a rescue in a desperate emergency.
