The US government imposed an entry ban on Monday on its own citizens wishing to return from the Democratic Republic of Congo, in order to prevent further spread of the Ebola virus.

Background: The Ebola outbreak in Congo

As a White House official announced on Monday, US citizens who are in Congo or have recently left the country will be placed on a flight prohibition list. The measure directly affects around two dozen Americans who had planned to fly to the US on Tuesday. They may only travel to the US after spending a waiting period of 21 days in a third country.

US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had previously justified the order with the increased Ebola risk. The disease is continuing to spread in Congo and has reached within a few hours' distance of the capital Kinshasa. The US State Department assured those affected of support during the waiting period.
