Reshaping of global trade flows

Refiners in Asia that traditionally drew crude from the Persian Gulf have had to look elsewhere, increasing demand for US and Atlantic Basin alternatives. For consumers, the picture is mixed. If the conflict de-escalates and damaged refineries in the Middle East return to service, the relative advantage enjoyed by US processors could narrow rapidly. Regulators and lawmakers have so far held back from intervening in the market. There is no indication that the Biden-era windfall tax proposals, revived briefly in earlier discussions, will be reintroduced in their previous form. Treasury officials have signaled that they are monitoring pricing closely but consider current levels a response to genuine supply scarcity rather than market manipulation.

Investors are positioning for the next set of earnings reports, due over the coming weeks. Refining-focused exchange-traded funds have outperformed broader energy indices since the conflict's latest intensification, and options markets point to continued expectations of upside surprises in quarterly results from Chevron, ExxonMobil and their smaller peers.
