The US government has revoked a special license for the sale of Iranian oil after three tankers were hit by unidentified projectiles in and near the Strait of Hormuz in recent days.
Background of the Decision
As the US government announced on Tuesday, the license was suspended as an immediate response to the recent attacks in the strait between Iran and Oman. "The United States has revoked a special license for the sale of Iranian oil today in response to attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz," Washington said. A statement from the government in Tehran was not initially available, and no one claimed responsibility for the attacks.
According to the British maritime authority UKMTO, three tankers in and near the strategically important strait had been hit by unknown projectiles in recent days. The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world's most important shipping lanes: approximately one-fifth of the oil consumed worldwide is transported through this strait. In view of the unexplained incidents, concern is growing about a possible escalation of tensions.
