The growth has led to greater variety among manufacturers and higher production volumes. At the same time, the question of when the use of dietary supplements is sensible and when it becomes excessive is moving to the center of attention.

Warning against excessive use

Nutrition experts, however, warn against excessive use.

Dietary supplements can be useful for people with a deficiency or certain illnesses. Without an identifiable need, however, additional vitamins and nutrients may have no effect. Some preparations may also interact with medications or other remedies.

The Federal Ministry is dealing with questions relating to nutrition and food. However, the reports at hand do not name any specific new regulation, campaign or recommendation from the ministry concerning the increase in production.

What consumers should keep in mind

For consumers, balanced assessment remains important. The strong expansion of production is an economic signal, but says little about the personal benefits of individual preparations. A balanced diet and professional advice when a deficiency is suspected are crucial.

Overall, the statistics show strong growth: According to the figures, what was once a niche market has become a market worth just over 2.08 billion euros. This development is accompanied by an expert warning against excessive and blanket use.
