The interim Venezuelan government chief Delcy Rodríguez has demanded the release of blocked Venezuelan foreign assets in order to cope with the aftermath of two severe earthquakes that left at least 3,811 dead and 16,740 injured.

The demand was directed at international financial institutions and foreign governments that hold funds belonging to the Venezuelan central bank and the state. Rodríguez pointed out that these resources were urgently needed given the humanitarian situation, in order to finance medical care, shelter, and the reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the official death toll stands at 3,811, as announced by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, on Wednesday evening (local time) on the platform X. In addition, 16,740 people were reported injured. Authorities consider it increasingly unlikely that any more survivors will be found beneath the rubble.
